Plantar fasciitis is the most common musculoskeletal problem seen in the foot. I was intrigued recently when searching the web for something and came across a couple of eBooks on plantar fasciitis touting some magical cures from their secret sauce. The problem is they do not even give you a hint what the secret sauce is until you part with $19.95 or $49.95, so you have no idea if it’s worth the money or not. Of course it’s really $99.95 worth of value that you are getting for $19.95 and if you buy now, you get all these bonuses on knee and back pain worth over a few hundred dollars…..gimme a freakin break! What a load of nonsense!
Then there are the testimonials and we all believe those don’t we?
There is no secret sauce. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation or degeneration of the plantar fascia which is the structure that holds up the arch of the foot. A true plantar fasciitis is caused by too much load in the plantar fascia, so the only real long term way to manage plantar fasciitis is to reduce the load in the tissues. All the treatments that are used for plantar fasciitis (and there are a lot!) do nothing more than help facilitate the healing. They will generally fail on their own if interventions are not done to reduce the load in the structure that is damaged. That load is reduced by reducing weight bearing activity levels, losing weight, stretching the calf muscles and using foot orthotics that actually have design parameters that reduce the load.
There is no magical cure, plantar fasciitis will come right if the load in the tissue that caused it gets reduced – thats not any sort of secret sauce. Juts follow the logical advice of those who know what they are talking about.
